Facilities

The Computer Science and Engineering Department occupies 30,771 square feet at the UNT Research Park located at 3940 N. Elm Street in Denton, TX. Approximately 22% of the space is devoted to faculty and staff office and conference space, 20% is department-dedicated teaching laboratories, and the remaining 56% is for Data Processing and research laboratory space, which includes office areas for teaching and research assistants. The department also shares a number of general purpose classrooms with other departments in the College of Engineering.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering maintains several computer systems that are dedicated to research and education. Three Pentium machines provide centralized file storage and authentication for students and faculty. These resources are exported to all computing resources to which the students have login capability. An Apache web server provides students with space to post static HTML pages and to develop PHP-based scripts for class and personal use.

A group of ten Pentium IV 2.4 GHz machines with 1 GB of RAM each and running Debian GNU/Linux provide general purpose computing by SSH and X-Windows connectivity. Two teaching laboratories, used primarily for programming courses, each contain 30 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 machines with 1 GB of RAM, 17-inch monitor and CD-ROM running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. These labs provide a Microsoft Windows based learning environment for introductory computer courses and other course related topics as needed. The Help Lab is also equipped with 10 machines of the same configuration.
